Myths

What is a Myth?
A myth is story about heroes or supernatural beings often attempting to explain creation, nature and human behavior.

Raven by Joe Wilson, Coast Salish
 Myths have five different elements:
  • Characters (main and supporting)
  • Settings
  • Problem/conflict
  • Outcome (explaination of nature)
  • Dialogue.
Read some of the myths from different cultures on the Planet Oz Kids website: http://www.planetozkids.com/oban/legends.htm

· Indian Reading Series: Stories and Legends of the Northwest http://www.nwrel.org/indianed/indianreading/

  • American Folklore website: http://americanfolklore.net/folklore/native-american-myths/

  • What myths did you like? What is the title of the myth you read? What culture does the myth come from? Identify the 5 elements.

According to the myths we have read, why do crows say "caw-caw"?

    World Cultures Week

This week was amazing! From the moment we walked in on Monday we could tell this week would be different. Hanging from the gallery were the cultural figures drawn by students. The daily news this week featured  countries around the world. The fun continued into lunch time with meals from different cultures. My favorite was eating with my students, enjoying the many performances, and watching my students try to use chopsticks! Did I mention I have multi-talented students in my class? You did a fantastic job providing opening entertainment for the assembly on Monday with your Russian dance. So many delicious dishes were prepared for our potluck. Thank you for your hard work! I would love for your child to copy down the recipe and bring it to school! The week was capped off with family night. What did you enjoy this week?

    Spaghetti Book Club- Book Reviews

    www.spaghettibookclub.org/
Check out Spaghetti Book Club! You can read about what other kids thought about a book you are interested in or have read. I like how you can search by title and author. Spend some time on the site.

Are there any books you now want to read and could add to your "someday book list" in the reading section of our morning work binder? Why do you want to read that book?

Are there any books reviewed that you already read? Do you agree with the reviewer?

Naming Traditions of Early North West Coast Native Americans

    • Naming traditions differed from tribe to tribe.
    • A person's had a number of names throughout his life.
    • Many NW Coast Native Americans were named after things in nature.
    • Legal names are given, but Native names are earned.
    • The names carry certain powers and responsibilities. For example, the power of the deer is it awarness, keeness, and protective nature.
We first looked at character traits and then NW coast animals that are said to represent these traits.

What is your Native American character name? Why did you choose that name?
